Earlier generations of Dorset's small population included an unusually large number of notable artists, including Dean Fawcett, Bea Humphrey, Elsa Bley, John Lilly, Claude Dern, Wallace Fahnestock and Edwin Child, to mention just a few.

Today's population also includes a number of notable artists, as well as several designers and builders of fine custom furniture, and many others whose homes, studios and shops produce a profusion of one-of-a-kind items.
