Reform and Response: The Impact of the Reformation on Culture and Society @ Burr and Burton Academy, Hunter Seminar Room

Green Mountain Academy welcomes Dartmouth College Lecturer Jane L. Carroll to talk about the art of the Reformation period. The Reformation brought into question the assumptions by which most Europeans had lived—that the Catholic Church’s teachings, personal good actions, and Christ’s sacrifice could ensure their salvation. Using the printing press and artworks, both sides presented their positions in propagandistic language that could be both bombastic and subtle. We will look at this central event in the shaping of the concept of free will, and how it played out in the art created in Northern Europe at that time. Registration is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. For more information or to register, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit www.greenmtnacademy.org.
