SUMMARY:Dorset Players presents Something Rotten!
DESCRIPTION:Something Rotten!  \nMusic & Lyrics by Karey Kirkpatrick & Wayne Kirkpatrick \nBook by Karey Kirkpatrick & John O’Farrell \nDirected and Choreographed by Renee Wymer \nMusical Direction by Lorri Bond \nProduced by Lynne Worth \nPresenting Sponsors: Burns Insurance Agency \nRE/MAX Four Seasons \nUnion Underground/Union South \nShow Sponsors: Haystack Catering \nGSK Climate Control \nMason Dental \n\n  \nWelcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous\, crowd-pleasing musical farce\, Something Rotten. Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick\, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell\, Something Rotten was lauded by audience members and critics alike\, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years”. \nSet in the 1590s\, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing\, dancing and acting at the same time\, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night\, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self\, and all that jazz. \nSomething Rotten features large song and dance numbers\, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters\, each with their own moment to shine. Throughout its Broadway run\, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences… in the beginning of the first act! It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical\,”. \n\n  \nPerformance Dates & Times: \nMay 15\, 16\, 22 & 23\, 2026 at 7:30PM \nMay 17 & 24\, 2026 at 2PM

SUMMARY:Lincoln Essay Competition Awards Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln Essay Competition Awards Luncheon\n\nSunday\, May 17th \nThis program does not include or require admission. \nTo honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, Vermont’s 8th graders were invited to reflect on the enduring significance of America’s founding document. First\, second\, and third-place winners were chosen from each of four regions\, with a two-way tie for third in one of the regions. Three honorable mentions were selected from the remaining combined pool of finalists. \nStudents will be coming from all over the state to be honored at the Lincoln Essay Competition Awards Luncheon in Hildene’s Lincoln Hall on Sunday\, May 17th. The public is also welcome to attend what has become one of Hildene’s most uplifting and inspiring occasions. To see the list of winners\, learn more about the LEC\, and to RSVP\, please click here.

DESCRIPTION:Using the Whole Animal: Introductory Deer Processing for Culinary & Craft\n\nThursday\, May 14\, 2026 – 4:30 PM\nMonday\, May 18\, 2026 – 10:30 AM\n\n\nMarble House Project1161 Dorset West RoadDorset\, VT\, 05251United States (map)\n\nJoin educator Dr. Theresa Emmerich Kamper and artist-in-residence Caroline Ross for an immersive\, hands-on workshop exploring how to use the entirety of a deer for culinary and craft purposes. Hosted by the artist residencies Marble House Project and In Situ Polyculture Commons\, this workshop will share a broad range of introductory techniques and skills. \nRooted in ancestral practices shaped by risk\, proximity\, and care\, the workshop treats the animal as a precious and integrated resource—one in which little is wasted\, and every part has potential. Further\, while deer are majestic and important animals\, deer populations are the number one threat to forest health in the Northeast (see note below). \n  \n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDates: Evening of May 14–17\, 2026 \n\n\nLocation: Marble House Project\, Dorset\, VT \n\n\nCapacity: up to 14 participants (two spots reserved for scholarships) \n\n\nPrerequisites: None \n\n\nMeals & Lodging \n\n\nMeals: Lunches and dinners will be prepared using the deer and course materials. \n\n\nBreakfasts: Simple self-serve breakfasts will be available for on-site participants. \n\n\nAccommodation Options: Workshop participants are invited to stay on-site at Marble House\, a historic estate home that offers a mix of private and shared accommodations. Staying on-site allows for an immersive experience—moving easily between workshop sessions\, meals\, and moments of quiet on the grounds—while engaging with the ecology of one of the Green Mountains’ most picturesque historic estates. \nFor those who prefer other options\, participants are also welcome to commute from nearby lodging or camp on the grounds\, offering flexibility to shape the experience in a way that best suits your needs. \n\n\nContact: Edward Morris with questions (edmorris@marblehouseproject.org).

SUMMARY:History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:History Book Club | Tuesday\, May 12th at 5PM \nThis book club focuses on modern history and other nonfiction books chosen by participants. You will find good conversation and history buffs at each meeting! \n  \nThis month’s book: The Spy and The Traitor by Ben Macintrye – Unfolding the three-way gamesmanship between America\, Britain\, and the Soviet Union\, and culminating in the gripping cinematic beat-by-beat of Oleg Gordievsky’s nail-biting escape from Moscow in 1985\, Ben Macintyre’s latest may be his best yet. Like the greatest novels of John le Carré\, it brings readers deep into a world of treachery and betrayal\, where the lines bleed between the personal and the professional\, and one man’s hatred of communism had the power to change the future of nations.

Participants will experiment with carving techniques that create a variety of surfaces\, from deep reliefs to subtle grain patterns\, learning how the baren’s pressure and the block’s texture can transform a print. \nWe will look to artists such as Shikō Munakata\, whose bold\, gouged surfaces expressed spiritual vitality; Kiyoshi Saitō\, who emphasized woodgrain and simplified form; and Hiroshi Yoshida\, who used fine gradations and embossing to evoke atmosphere. Students will carve and print using the natural grain of shina plywood and explore how brushwork\, baren rubbing\, and pigment application can heighten the sense of touch and movement within the image. \nAll levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Hildene
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk\n\nSaturday\, May 9th\n7:00 am – 10:00 am \nThis program is free and does not require admission. \nJoin local birders to gather long-term data on the presence of birds\, their abundance\, and changes in populations. Appropriate for birders of all skill levels\, the walks traverse uneven terrain on forest and meadow trails and around the main house. Meet at the Welcome Center parking lot. Free. \nBird Note:  Ruffed Grouse \nHave you ever been walking in the woods and heard what sounded like a tractor starting?  It is likely coming from a Ruffed Grouse ‘drumming’ to attract a mate. This sound is made when the male beats his wings against the air to create a vacuum. He usually displays his drumming prowess on a stage: a log\, stone or mound of dirt roughly 10-12 inches above the ground. Grouse are crow-sized ground birds of mottled brown\, white and reddish plumage. When fanned\, the long tail is bordered by a black band with white fringe at the end — a distinctive feather if found alone on the ground. (Photo is used with permission by Mary Holland of Naturally Curious) \nA grouse nest is a small depression in the ground lined by sticks\, grasses and buds. Grouse forage on vegetation\, including leaves\, buds\, and fruits of ferns\, shrubs\, and woody plants. Typically\, only a small number of the 8-14 chicks will survive to adulthood. Ruffed Grouse are readily heard\, but less often seen at Hildene.
