SUMMARY:Women-Centered Workshop on Sugarbush Silviculture
DESCRIPTION:Sep 07\, 2025\, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM \nSmokey House Center\, 426 Danby Mountain Rd\, Danby\, VT 05739\, USA \nPlease join Smokey House Center\, Women and our Woodlands\, and Audubon Vermont on Sunday\, September 7th from 10am to 3pm for a women-centered workshop on sugarbush silviculture. While it may seem like sugar production and forest management are at odds\, they couldn’t be more connected. Smokey House Center is launching a new research and demonstration sugarbush on the side of Dorset peak to answer some of the questions that foresters and sugarmakers wonder about managing a forest for both timber and sugar production. For instance\, what are the impacts on sap volumes and sugar levels after a harvest in the short and long term? What is the ideal gap size to promote regeneration of multiple tree species?  \nThe morning will consist of an easy-moderate walk through Smokey House’s campus sugarbush. We will return to the conference barn for lunch and then have an optional afternoon hike up Dorset peak to see the silvicultural trials painted in the Dorset sugarbush. This is a somewhat steep hike. If you have mobility concerns\, please reach out so we can make a plan that works for you. Dress to be in the woods and remember to wear blaze orange for hunting season. \nRegister here: https://www.smokeyhouse.org/event-details/women-centered-workshop-on-sugarbush-silviculture

SUMMARY:Nonfiction Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Nonfiction Book Club | Tuesday\, September 9th at 5PM \nThis book club focuses on modern history and other nonfiction books chosen by participants. You will find good conversation and refreshments at each meeting! \n  \nThis month’s book: Kingmaker by Sonia Purnell \nWhen Pamela Churchill Harriman died in 1997\, the obituaries that followed were predictably scathing – and many were downright sexist. Written off as a mere courtesan and social climber\, her true legacy was overshadowed by a glamorous social life and her infamous erotic adventures. Much of what she did behind the scenes – on both sides of the Atlantic – remained invisible and secret. That is\, until now: with a wealth of fresh research\, interviews and newly discovered sources\, Sonia Purnell unveils for the first time the full\, spectacular story of how she left an indelible mark on the world today.
