DESCRIPTION:Mokuhanga Carving and Printing With Texture: A Two-Day Workshop With Patty Hudak \nInstructor: Patty Hudak\nSaturday & Sunday\, May 9 & 10\n10 a.m.–4 p.m.\nSVAC Member: $250; Non-member: $305 (includes materials fee)\nAges 16+ \n  \nThis workshop explores texture in mokuhanga\, the Japanese method of water-based woodblock printing\, as both a visual and tactile language. Participants will experiment with carving techniques that create a variety of surfaces\, from deep reliefs to subtle grain patterns\, learning how the baren’s pressure and the block’s texture can transform a print. \nWe will look to artists such as Shikō Munakata\, whose bold\, gouged surfaces expressed spiritual vitality; Kiyoshi Saitō\, who emphasized woodgrain and simplified form; and Hiroshi Yoshida\, who used fine gradations and embossing to evoke atmosphere. Students will carve and print using the natural grain of shina plywood and explore how brushwork\, baren rubbing\, and pigment application can heighten the sense of touch and movement within the image. \nAll levels are welcome. Materials are provided.

DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk\n\nSaturday\, May 9th\n7:00 am – 10:00 am \nThis program is free and does not require admission. \nJoin local birders to gather long-term data on the presence of birds\, their abundance\, and changes in populations. Appropriate for birders of all skill levels\, the walks traverse uneven terrain on forest and meadow trails and around the main house. Meet at the Welcome Center parking lot. Free. \nBird Note:  Ruffed Grouse \nHave you ever been walking in the woods and heard what sounded like a tractor starting?  It is likely coming from a Ruffed Grouse ‘drumming’ to attract a mate. This sound is made when the male beats his wings against the air to create a vacuum. He usually displays his drumming prowess on a stage: a log\, stone or mound of dirt roughly 10-12 inches above the ground. Grouse are crow-sized ground birds of mottled brown\, white and reddish plumage. When fanned\, the long tail is bordered by a black band with white fringe at the end — a distinctive feather if found alone on the ground. (Photo is used with permission by Mary Holland of Naturally Curious) \nA grouse nest is a small depression in the ground lined by sticks\, grasses and buds. Grouse forage on vegetation\, including leaves\, buds\, and fruits of ferns\, shrubs\, and woody plants. Typically\, only a small number of the 8-14 chicks will survive to adulthood. Ruffed Grouse are readily heard\, but less often seen at Hildene.

Most accounts of American Civil War have largely neglected the extraordinary and influential lives of Jessie Frémont\, Nelly McClellan\, Ellen Sherman\, and Julia Grant\, the wives of Abraham Lincoln’s top generals. They were their husbands’ closest confidantes and had a profound impact on the generals’ ambitions and actions. In Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War – for Better and for Worse\, Candice Shy Hooper triangulates Lincoln\, his top generals and their wives to show how the wives’ views of Lincoln impacted their husbands\, and ultimately\, the course of the Civil War.  One prominent Civil War historian wrote that the book helps us better understand how the generals’ wives “helped shape them into heroes — or failures.” \n  \nGuest Speaker:\nCandice Shy Hooper built an early career on Capitol Hill as an aide to Congressman Charlie Wilson and later as a lobbyist\, before returning to school to earn a Master’s in military history from George Washington University — the pursuit that became her true intellectual passion. Her first book\, Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives (Kent State University Press\, 2016)\, won three national awards\, and her second\, Delivered Under Fire: Absalom Markland and Freedom’s Mail (Potomac Books\, 2023)\, has earned wide praise and recognition in history and biography. Her work has appeared in The New York Times and The Journal of Military History\, and she has spoken at the Society for Military History\, the Society for Civil War Historians\, and the U.S. Naval Academy; she also serves on several advisory boards\, including the Ulysses S. and Julia D. Grant Historical Home Advisory Board and the Editorial Advisory Board of The Journal of Military History.
