SUMMARY:GMALL Presents: The Presidential Library
DESCRIPTION:The Presidential Library: \nBooks that Shaped Washington\, Jefferson\, \nLincoln\, Roosevelt\, and Others \nwith Joseph Luzzi of Bard College \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will discuss why George Washington was obsessed with a play about a Roman freedom fighter who opposed Julius Caesar; how Thomas Jefferson came to have the largest personal library in the country; what drew Abraham Lincoln to Shakespeare so obsessively (and which Shakespeare play he loved most); which British poet Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorized as a child and read throughout his life; why John F. Kennedy was devoted to a spy novelist whose books would create one of the greatest film franchises in history; and how Barack Obama came to understand his American identity and spirit through two favorite authors. Together\, we will see how presidential action and presidential reading are intimately linked\, as we explore the momentous events in these presidents’ lives considering the books that inspired their thoughts and guided their actions. Professor Luzzi will also summarize his ”ALL” (American Library List) detailing the sometimes-surprising books and literature\, which influenced many other U.S. leaders.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, February 3 \n5:30-7 pm \nvia Zoom webinar \n$20

SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Hildene
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk\n\nSaturday\, February 7th\n9:00 – 10:30 am \nJoin local birders to gather long-term data on the presence of birds\, their abundance\, and changes in populations. Appropriate for birders of all skill levels\, the walks traverse uneven terrain on forest and meadow trails and around the main house. Meet at the Welcome Center parking lot. \nFebruary Bird Note: Red Crossbills and White-winged Crossbills are medium-sized finches with distinctively crossed bills adapted to extract seeds from spruce\, fir\, pine and other conifer tree cones. When they pry into a cone\, the crossed bill tips come together. With some twisting and turning of their heads\, they force a gap between the cone scales. They then use their tongues to retrieve the seed inside. Crossbills are largely nomadic\, following cone production. Because cone production in the north has been low this year\, there is a prediction that this will be an eruption year: finches will be heading south looking for food. Crossbills flock year-round. They often call in flight and can be spotted feeding at the tops of conifers. Each species has its own feeding niche. While there have not been any sightings of the White-winged Crossbills at Hildene yet\, there have been sightings of the Red Crossbill. \nNo registration is required. Call Stephanie at (802) 367-7960 or click the button if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Spring Planning for Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:Spring Planning for Invasive Species | Sunday\, February 8th at 1PM \nIgnoring invasives in the forest is like ignoring weeds in a garden. Invasive species are spreading \nin Vermont\, and it is up to ALL of us to fight them. Whether on public or private lands\, invasive \nplants outlast\, outcompete\, and outproduce native species. Addressing invasives is essential for \nthe natural future of Vermont. \n  \nThis will be a hybrid program starting in the library and then heading outside to Pinnacle Forest to look for invasives. The hike will be approximately 1.5 miles. Bring your poles and microspikes if the weather looks icy. No registration. This program is in collaboration with Hike Dorset.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents: MD&G Railroad to Historical Rail Trail
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents – From MD&G Railroad to Historic Rail Trail\nThursday\, February 12 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Historic Bennington County Courthouse\n\n\n\nGreen Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning is excited to partner with the Manchester Historical Society to present this talk about the Historic Rail Trail in Manchester. The transformation of the Manchester\, Dorset\, and Granville (MD&G) Railroad into a modern recreational trail represents over a century of industrial and community history. Beginning in 1901\, the Norcross-West Co. developed the railroad and a state-of-the-art finishing mill to transport over 500\,000 cubic feet of “Dorset White” marble for the construction of the New York Public Library\, then the largest marble building in the world. Following the cessation of operations in 1918\, and removal of the rails in 1934\, the line sat for decades fading from memory until a vision emerged to preserve this corridor as a public asset by the formation of Old Railroad Bed\, LLC\, which purchased the land in 2009. The project involved significant land and infrastructure donations\, including legal challenges and hundreds of hours of work by volunteers overseeing the trail’s construction until the Town of Manchester officially took ownership following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 2\, 2023. Join Manchester Historical Society (MHS) Curator Shawn Harrington and MHS Board Member Bill Badger for a presentation covering the century of history and change. This program is free and open to all – or pay what you wish and support local history at a level that feels right to you. For more information or to register\, please call 802-867-0111 or visit our website at greenmtnacademy.org.
