SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Can SILK Help Save the Planet?
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents – Can SILK Help Save the Planet?\nTuesday\, August 12 from 5:30 – 7:00pm at Burr and Burton Academy\, Riley Center for the Arts\n\nGreen Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Tufts University Professor Fiorenzo Omenetto to talk about silk as a viable alternative to plastics.\n \nRemember “There’s a great future in plastics” in The Graduate? Well\, decades later we are drowning in it. What if instead we made stuff out of materials produced by nature\, that would be truly sustainable? \nMeet Fio Omenetto and SILK – yes\, silk! \nThe stuff fashionistas wear. But Fio and his SILKLAB at Tufts University use it to make the planet a better place. A few examples of dozens of proven applications:\no Building silk drones that sniff viruses in the air;\no Creating protein glitter that reflects sunlight to efficiently cool buildings;\no Coating fruit and vegetables to quadruple shelf life;\no Producing shirts that “read” body chemistry for physical and mental triage. \nJoin us on August 12 at 5:30 pm at Burr and Burton Academy for a hands-on demonstration of how silk can change how the world works!

SUMMARY:What's Next for America's Universities?
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, July 8 from 5:30 – 7:00pm at Burr and Burton Academy\, Riley Center for the Arts\n\n\n\n\nGreen Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Vishakha Desai\, faculty member at Columbia University\, to talk about the future of American universities. America’s universities face a witches’ brew of challenges: cuts in research support\, rising costs\, student protests\, challenges to free speech\, governmental pressure on curricula\, cancelled student visas\, declining student populations — and that’s the short version of the list! How much of this is the consequence of overly progressive policies of the past? How much reflects the reactionary policies of the present? What will be the consequences of spending cuts and declining enrollment? Is this really about the future of democracy as some argue? What’s really at stake? Registration is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.
