SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Hildene
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk\n\nSaturday\, August 8th\n7:00 am – 9:30 am \nThis program is free and does not require admission. Appropriate for teens and adults. \nMeet at the Welcome Center parking lot. Join local birders to gather long-term data on the presence of birds\, their abundance\, and changes in populations. Appropriate for birders of all skill levels\, the walks run along uneven terrain on forest and meadow trails and around the main house. No registration required. Questions? Contact Stephanie at (802) 367-7960 or click to email. \nBird Note: Belted Kingfisher \nAugust is the “finishing” month—time for birds to finish raising young\, fatten up for migration\, and prepare to leave Vermont’s breeding grounds. While many species look quite different from the birds we saw in spring\, the Belted Kingfisher remains easy to recognize by its size\, plumage\, and loud rattling call. \nCommon along lakes\, ponds\, and streams\, this white-breasted bird has a bluish-gray back\, crest\, and collar. One of the few bird species in which the female is more colorful than the male\, she sports an additional rusty-brown belt across her belly. Watch for kingfishers perched over water or hovering before plunging headfirst to catch fish. Though many migrate south for winter\, some remain in northern areas as long as the water stays open.

SUMMARY:Parlor Music at Hildene: An Intimate Summer Evening in the Lincoln Family Home
DESCRIPTION:Parlor Music at Hildene: An Intimate Summer Evening in the Lincoln Family Home\n\nTuesday\, August 4th\n5:00 pm – 6:30 pm \nThis program requires registration\, and does not include admission for the day. \nhttps://hildene.org/pages/events \nTreat yourself to a summer evening of piano\, harp\, and organ music as award-winning musicians Rachel Clemente and Dr. Alastair Stout bring the Lincoln family’s instruments to life in the intimate setting of the Lincolns’ home overlooking their formal garden in full bloom. A fitting nod to Mary Harlan Lincoln who was classically trained on harp and piano and to Robert who delighted in playing the Aeolian organ\, this is a rare opportunity for audience members to experience an evening of music much as the Lincolns may have enjoyed it in their home. Hildene’s Exhibits and Collections Director\, Gary Parzych\, will share some stories about the Lincolns to accompany the music. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required\, and seating is limited. Admission is by donation. All proceeds benefit Hildene’s Organ Restoration Fund.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents – Iran and the Near East: War\, Consequence\, and the Uncertain Road Ahead
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents – Iran and the Near East: War\, Consequence\, and the Uncertain Road Ahead\nTuesday\, July 14 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Hildene’s Lincoln Hall\n\n\nGreen Mountain Academy welcomes author and former United States Ambassador to Croatia\, Peter Galbraith\, to talk about the situation in Iran and the Near East. In the spring of 2026\, the United States launched military operations against Iran\, opening a new and consequential chapter in the long and troubled history between the two nations. But what comes next? This talk will examine the origins\, conduct\, and human costs of the conflict — and wrestle honestly with the hardest question of all: what kind of Iran will emerge from the rubble? Drawing on historical precedent\, regional expertise\, and frank reflection on the limits of military power\, Galbraith will explore three plausible futures — a Iran nudged toward political reform\, a successor regime more hardline and hostile than the one it replaced\, or a descent into prolonged civil war and fragmentation. This is not a lecture with easy answers but an invitation to think carefully and grapple with a crisis that will shape the region — and American foreign policy — for generations. Registration is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

When perched waiting to dart out to grab an insect\, it pumps its tail up and down. Be on the lookout for this behavioral trademark. The Eastern Phoebe is well known for nesting over a doorway\, on a light post or under an eve\, persistent in constructing a nest of mud and mosses.  It is one of the first birds to return here in the spring. SUMMARY:Lincoln Essay Competition Awards Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln Essay Competition Awards Luncheon\n\nSunday\, May 17th \nThis program does not include or require admission. \nTo honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, Vermont’s 8th graders were invited to reflect on the enduring significance of America’s founding document. Students from around the state weighed in on a wide range of current national issues\, answering the question of whether actions being taken to address these concerns align with the country’s bedrock tenets. \nHildene received 147 submissions to this year’s 8th Grade Lincoln Essay Competition\, now celebrating its 20th year. First\, second\, and third-place winners were chosen from each of four regions\, with a two-way tie for third in one of the regions. Three honorable mentions were selected from the remaining combined pool of finalists. \nStudents will be coming from all over the state to be honored at the Lincoln Essay Competition Awards Luncheon in Hildene’s Lincoln Hall on Sunday\, May 17th. The public is also welcome to attend what has become one of Hildene’s most uplifting and inspiring occasions. To see the list of winners\, learn more about the LEC\, and to RSVP\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Hildene
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk\n\nSaturday\, May 9th\n7:00 am – 10:00 am \nThis program is free and does not require admission. \nJoin local birders to gather long-term data on the presence of birds\, their abundance\, and changes in populations. Appropriate for birders of all skill levels\, the walks traverse uneven terrain on forest and meadow trails and around the main house. Meet at the Welcome Center parking lot. Free. \nBird Note:  Ruffed Grouse \nHave you ever been walking in the woods and heard what sounded like a tractor starting?  It is likely coming from a Ruffed Grouse ‘drumming’ to attract a mate. This sound is made when the male beats his wings against the air to create a vacuum. He usually displays his drumming prowess on a stage: a log\, stone or mound of dirt roughly 10-12 inches above the ground. Grouse are crow-sized ground birds of mottled brown\, white and reddish plumage. When fanned\, the long tail is bordered by a black band with white fringe at the end — a distinctive feather if found alone on the ground. (Photo is used with permission by Mary Holland of Naturally Curious) \nA grouse nest is a small depression in the ground lined by sticks\, grasses and buds. Grouse forage on vegetation\, including leaves\, buds\, and fruits of ferns\, shrubs\, and woody plants. Typically\, only a small number of the 8-14 chicks will survive to adulthood. Ruffed Grouse are readily heard\, but less often seen at Hildene.

SUMMARY:Bird Walk at Hildene
DESCRIPTION:Bird Walk\n\nSaturday\, February 7th\n9:00 – 10:30 am \nJoin local birders to gather long-term data on the presence of birds\, their abundance\, and changes in populations. Appropriate for birders of all skill levels\, the walks traverse uneven terrain on forest and meadow trails and around the main house. Meet at the Welcome Center parking lot. \nFebruary Bird Note: Red Crossbills and White-winged Crossbills are medium-sized finches with distinctively crossed bills adapted to extract seeds from spruce\, fir\, pine and other conifer tree cones. When they pry into a cone\, the crossed bill tips come together. With some twisting and turning of their heads\, they force a gap between the cone scales. They then use their tongues to retrieve the seed inside. Crossbills are largely nomadic\, following cone production. Because cone production in the north has been low this year\, there is a prediction that this will be an eruption year: finches will be heading south looking for food. Crossbills flock year-round. They often call in flight and can be spotted feeding at the tops of conifers. Each species has its own feeding niche. While there have not been any sightings of the White-winged Crossbills at Hildene yet\, there have been sightings of the Red Crossbill. \nNo registration is required.
