SUMMARY:GMALL Presents – Art for the People: From the Southern Vermont Artists to For the Love of Vermont
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents – Art for the People: From the Southern Vermont Artists to For the Love of Vermont\nThursday\, September 24th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Van Degna Gallery\n\nGreen Mountain Academy is excited to partner with the Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Manchester Historical Society to present this talk about the extraordinary history of art in our region. Manchester Historical Society curator Shawn Harrington traces the evolution of art in Southern Vermont\, from the early Dorset painters of the 1920s to the lasting influence of Bartlett Arkell and the founding of the Southern Vermont Artists. Through stories of artists\, patrons\, and the community\, it explores how a regional movement grew into the Southern Vermont Arts Center and shaped a lasting cultural legacy that continues today with the vision presented in For the Love of Vermont: The Lyman Orton Collection. The enduring idea is that great art should be accessible to all. This program is free and open to all – or pay what you wish and support local history at a level that feels right to you. For more information or to register\, please call 802-867-0111 or visit our website at greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents –Prismatic Utopia: Exploring the Uses of Color in Shaker Life
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents –Prismatic Utopia: Exploring the Uses of Color in Shaker Life\nThursday\, September 10th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Van Degna Gallery\n\n \nGreen Mountain Academy welcomes multimedia artist Brece Honeycutt whose long-term project\, Prismatic Utopia\, explores the practical\, temporal\, and spiritual uses of color in the Shaker community between 1790 and 1860. Shaker writings carefully documented where color could be used\, who applied it\, and even the paint formulas themselves. Particular attention is given to Prussian blue and chrome yellow\, colors that symbolically linked heaven and utility. This talk suggests that Shaker communities sought to create a physical utopia adorned in color—a true prismatic utopia\, where heaven and earth reflect one another. Registration is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents – The Dutch Room Restoration Project
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents – The Dutch Room Restoration Project\nTuesday\, August 25 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Van Degna Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreen Mountain Academy welcomes Holly Salmon\, the John L. and Susan K. Gardner Director of Conservation at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston\, to talk about the restoration of its Dutch Room gallery. \nThe Dutch Room is a grand second-floor gallery showcasing 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art. The comprehensive restoration is addressing everything from terracotta tile floor to the intricately painted 16th century coffered ceiling and many of the works in-between. It is also the room where six of thirteen irreplaceable works of art were stolen in 1990\, leaving behind empty frames and a reminder of the Museum’s unending hope for their return. \nJoin Holly Salmon for a discussion of how she and the conservation team are carrying out this extensive restoration and the discoveries they’ve made along the way. Registration is $20 per person. For more information or to register\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n—\n \n\nLiz Berard

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Four Rational People
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents – FOUR RATIONAL PEOPLE\nSaturday\, August 1 from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Arkell Pavilion at Southern Vermont Arts Center\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreen Mountain Academy is excited to partner with Manchester Music Festival and Southern Vermont Arts Center to present the screening of Four Rational People. Goethe once said that a string quartet is like “a conversation between FOUR RATIONAL PEOPLE\,” and for the members of the Emerson String Quartet\, that conversation is coming to a bittersweet ending as they embark on their final season of a fifty-year history that includes 9 GRAMMY Awards and thousands of concerts. \nInterweaving vivid memories of the Emerson Quartet’s past with delicate observations of life on the road in the weeks and days before disbanding\, Four Rational People explores the group’s difficult decision to walk away from the things that they cherish most in life: the music they play and the friends they hold dear. At once a frank examination of the tyranny of aging and a cri de cœur to pass the torch to a new generation of artists\, Four Rational People culminates with one final Emerson Quartet performance for the ages\, leaving all to ponder what happens to us after the final curtain. Philip Setzer is a member of the Emerson String Quartet and is also the Artistic Director of the Manchester Music Festival. A talk back with Mr. Setzer will follow the screening. Tickets are $20 per person. For more information to purchase tickets\, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:Mokuhanga Carving and Printing With Texture at SVAC
DESCRIPTION:Mokuhanga Carving and Printing With Texture: A Two-Day Workshop With Patty Hudak \nInstructor: Patty Hudak\nSaturday & Sunday\, May 9 & 10\n10 a.m.–4 p.m.\nSVAC Member: $250; Non-member: $305 (includes materials fee)\nAges 16+ \n  \nThis workshop explores texture in mokuhanga\, the Japanese method of water-based woodblock printing\, as both a visual and tactile language. Participants will experiment with carving techniques that create a variety of surfaces\, from deep reliefs to subtle grain patterns\, learning how the baren’s pressure and the block’s texture can transform a print. \nWe will look to artists such as Shikō Munakata\, whose bold\, gouged surfaces expressed spiritual vitality; Kiyoshi Saitō\, who emphasized woodgrain and simplified form; and Hiroshi Yoshida\, who used fine gradations and embossing to evoke atmosphere. Students will carve and print using the natural grain of shina plywood and explore how brushwork\, baren rubbing\, and pigment application can heighten the sense of touch and movement within the image. \nAll levels are welcome. SUMMARY:GMALL Presents: Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War – for Better and for Worse\n\nSouthern Vermont Arts Center\, Yester House\nMay 7th | 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM EDT\n\n\nYou know the old adage: behind every great man\, there is a great woman\, but as with most things in life\, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Most accounts of American Civil War have largely neglected the extraordinary and influential lives of Jessie Frémont\, Nelly McClellan\, Ellen Sherman\, and Julia Grant\, the wives of Abraham Lincoln’s top generals. They were their husbands’ closest confidantes and had a profound impact on the generals’ ambitions and actions. In Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War – for Better and for Worse\, Candice Shy Hooper triangulates Lincoln\, his top generals and their wives to show how the wives’ views of Lincoln impacted their husbands\, and ultimately\, the course of the Civil War.  One prominent Civil War historian wrote that the book helps us better understand how the generals’ wives “helped shape them into heroes — or failures.” \n  \nGuest Speaker:\nCandice Shy Hooper built an early career on Capitol Hill as an aide to Congressman Charlie Wilson and later as a lobbyist\, before returning to school to earn a Master’s in military history from George Washington University — the pursuit that became her true intellectual passion. Her first book\, Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives (Kent State University Press\, 2016)\, won three national awards\, and her second\, Delivered Under Fire: Absalom Markland and Freedom’s Mail (Potomac Books\, 2023)\, has earned wide praise and recognition in history and biography. Her work has appeared in The New York Times and The Journal of Military History\, and she has spoken at the Society for Military History\, the Society for Civil War Historians\, and the U.S. Naval Academy; she also serves on several advisory boards\, including the Ulysses S. and Julia D. Grant Historical Home Advisory Board and the Editorial Advisory Board of The Journal of Military History.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents: Can Democracies Thrive Without Growth?
DESCRIPTION:Democracy and Economics: Can Democracies Thrive Without Growth?  with Peter Radford \nFinancial Times columnist Martin Wolf has argued that modern democracy is\, at its core\, a product of sustained economic growth — and that when growth slows\, democracy fades. But is this truly the case? And if so\, what does it mean for the future of the post-industrial West? This discussion untangles the complex ties between economic performance and democratic resilience\, explores whether today’s democracies are at risk\, and considers how they might be reinvented for a digital age. \nPeter Radford is the publisher of The Radford Free Press\, a blog on economics covering contemporary issues and the state of economic theory. More broadly\, he is also a writer and consultant on economics and business theory. He is a cofounder and serves on the executive committee of the World Economics Association. \nThursday\, April 2\, 5:30-7p – $20

Postcards\, once highly regulated by the government and utilitarian in their purpose\, came into their heyday in the early 20th century once photographs and artwork were used. Manchester\, being a destination resort area\, used postcards to promote the area’s beauty and amenities\, and thousands were produced and sold. Join MHS curator Shawn Harrington for another look at a collection of his favorite postcards\, some with very rare imagery of the Village\, Depot\, Center\, the mountain towns\, and more. This program is free because of the generous support of The Keelan Family Foundation and an anonymous sponsor\, however\, advance registrations are appreciated. For more information or to register\, please call 802-867-0111 or visit our website at greenmtnacademy.org.

SUMMARY:GMALL Presents - Hope is Wild: Land Trusts and the Path to Rewilding the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:GMALL Presents – Hope is Wild: Land Trusts and the Path to Rewilding the Northeast\nThursday\, October 23 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at The Southern Vermont Arts Center\, Yester House\n\nGreen Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Jon Leibowitz\, CEO of Northeast Wilderness\, to talk about the essential work of land trusts\, explaining how they function and why they are central to the future of conservation. This talk will also highlight a particularly powerful and hopeful strategy known as rewilding. The evidence tells us that the forever-wild approach can halve biodiversity loss on protected lands while increasing forest carbon storage. Land trusts are critical in helping Vermont achieve the objectives of Act 59\, the Community Resilience and Biodiversity Protection Act\, which establishes the ambitious goal to conserve 30% of Vermont’s lands and waters by 2030. Registration is $20 per person.
