Bird Note: Eastern Phoebe

The Eastern Phoebe is a flycatcher, a family group generally lacking distinctive colors or field marks. About the size of a bluebird, the brownish-gray phoebe has buffy underparts and lacks wing-bars or face/eye markings. When perched waiting to dart out to grab an insect, it pumps its tail up and down. Be on the lookout for this behavioral trademark. The Eastern Phoebe is well known for nesting over a doorway, on a light post or under an eve, persistent in constructing a nest of mud and mosses.  It is one of the first birds to return here in the spring. Listen for its namesake call: pheeꞌ-bee.
