America’s universities face a witches’ brew of challenges: cuts in research support, rising costs, student protests, challenges to free speech, governmental pressure on curricula, cancelled student visas, declining student populations — and that’s the short version of the list! How much of this is the consequence of overly progressive policies of the past? How much reflects the reactionary policies of the present?
